How MATRIX Escrow Works
A step-by-step guide to the most transparent escrow platform for getting work done. No subscriptions, no hidden fees, no Stripe account required to get paid.
What Is MATRIX?
MATRIX is a mission-based escrow platform that connects task posters with workers around the world. Every mission is backed by Stripe-powered escrow — meaning the funds are collected upfront, held securely, and only released when the job is verified complete. Unlike traditional freelance marketplaces that charge 20% fees or require both parties to have Stripe accounts, MATRIX uses a simple 3% flat fee that's transparent and predictable.
The platform was built to solve the fundamental trust problem in online work: how does a client know they'll get what they paid for, and how does a worker know they'll actually get paid? MATRIX's answer is escrow — a financial arrangement where a neutral third party holds funds until both sides fulfill their obligations. We use Stripe's manual capture system to handle this securely, and the entire process is tracked with timestamps, geo-location metadata, and cryptographic audit trails.
How Escrow Works — Step by Step
Post a Mission
Describe your task, set a budget (minimum $10), choose a category, and submit. You only pay if your mission gets funded — there's no charge to post.
Fund Escrow
Pay the full mission amount plus a 3% platform fee via credit or debit card. Stripe processes the payment using manual capture — funds are authorized but not yet transferred.
Worker Accepts
Workers browse open missions and accept the ones that match their skills. Once accepted, the mission moves to "Active" status and the worker begins.
Work & Communicate
The worker completes the task while you track progress through the dashboard. Both parties can communicate, share files, and monitor the mission from anywhere.
Submit Proof
When the work is done, the worker submits proof of completion — files, screenshots, or any deliverable. This submission is geo-tagged and timestamped for full transparency.
Review & Release
You review the proof. Satisfied? Click "Release Payment" and the escrowed funds are captured and sent directly to the worker. If something is wrong, you can open a dispute.
Worker Payment — No Stripe Account Required
One of the biggest barriers in traditional freelancing platforms is the requirement for workers to create and maintain their own Stripe or PayPal accounts. MATRIX eliminates this entirely. When a client posts a mission and funds escrow, the payment is collected through the client's card via Stripe. When the job is complete and payment is released, MATRIX handles the payout to the worker's bank account or preferred payout method.
Workers simply enter their banking details (routing and account numbers) once in their settings, and MATRIX processes the payout using Stripe Connect. There are no additional verification hurdles, no Stripe account creation, and no delays due to "missing documents" on the worker's side. The 3% platform fee covers this entire infrastructure — Stripe's processing costs, escrow management, dispute handling, and payout processing.
Dispute Resolution Process
Despite the best intentions, disputes sometimes happen. MATRIX has a fair, transparent dispute resolution process designed to protect both parties:
- Flag the Mission: Either party can flag a mission for dispute at any point after the worker has accepted. This immediately pauses the mission and freezes the escrowed funds.
- Evidence Submission: Both parties submit their evidence — the client shares requirements and expectations, the worker shares proof of work and communications. All previous proof submissions, geo-tags, and timestamps are preserved as an immutable record.
- Admin Review: A MATRIX administrator reviews the evidence within 48 hours. The admin considers the original mission description, the submitted proof, and any communication history between parties.
- Resolution: Based on the review, the admin either releases payment to the worker (if work meets requirements), refunds the client (if the work was insufficient), or splits the escrowed amount proportionally.
- Appeals: If either party disagrees with the decision, a final appeal can be submitted with additional evidence. Resolution on appeals takes an additional 24 hours.
Less than 2% of MATRIX missions end up in dispute. The escrow model creates strong incentives for both sides to communicate clearly and deliver exactly what was promised — disputes are rare because the system is designed for fairness from day one.
